Extremely Rare Skin Cancer Detected in Assam: Doctors Issue Alert
A rare case of Basal Cell Carcinoma, a form of skin cancer uncommon in India, was detected during routine screening at the Cancer Screening Centre of SK Roy Civil Hospital in Hailakandi district, Assam. Hospital officials said the finding is significant because such cases are infrequently identified in the country and were uncovered as part of recent screening procedures at the government-run facility.
Dr. Ahimik Biswas of the hospital’s Cancer Screening Centre confirmed the diagnosis and emphasized its rarity. “We received a very rare cancer case called Basal Cell Carcinoma. This type of cancer is extremely uncommon in India, and such cases are rarely detected,” he said.
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) typically arises in the outer layer of the skin and is most often linked to prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Medical experts note that while BCCs are generally slow-growing, early diagnosis and timely treatment improve outcomes and reduce the risk of local tissue damage.
The detection at a government screening centre has drawn attention from the region’s medical community, underscoring the value of cancer screening programs in identifying even uncommon conditions. Hospital officials urged continued vigilance for unusual skin lesions and stressed that prompt medical evaluation is important for effective care.
