Tezpur Startup Launches Region’s First Portable Smartphone Microscope
Tezpur University’s first deep‑tech startup, Labdig Innovations and Systems, on May 16, 2026 unveiled Moboscope, a portable smartphone microscope system designed to turn ordinary phones into capable microscopes for education, basic healthcare and field work. The launch took place at Tezpur University and marks the conversion of university research into a commercial product from Northeast India.
Moboscope is intended for classrooms, college laboratories, hospitals and remote field locations where access to conventional microscopes is limited. By attaching to a smartphone, it allows students and teachers to observe small specimens and carry out simple science experiments without costly laboratory equipment.
The system combines tailored optical components, controlled illumination and a custom Android application that captures and processes microscopic images on the phone itself. Users can view, save and share observations directly through the mobile app, enabling quick documentation and remote consultation.
Designed for portability, Moboscope is compact, lightweight and does not require a continuous power supply, making it suitable for use in areas with unreliable electricity. Its makers say these design choices aim to increase practical science access in resource‑constrained settings.
Beyond education, Labdig positions Moboscope as a tool for frontline workers and researchers in basic healthcare screening, veterinary checks and agricultural field inspections, enabling preliminary sample examination in underserved areas.
The product launch was inaugurated by the Pro‑Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University, with entrepreneur Hemanta Kumar Lahkar among attendees. The Pro‑Vice Chancellor praised the team’s translational efforts-turning laboratory research into a usable product-and urged further strengthening of the university’s startup ecosystem.
Senior academic leadership, including the registrar‑in‑charge, dean of academic affairs, the IPR chair professor, department and centre heads, faculty, researchers, school teachers and students attended the programme, underscoring institutional support for commercialization.
Labdig Innovations and Systems was founded in 2022 by Pabitra Nath of the Department of Physics and Chayanika Deka Nath as Tezpur University’s first deep‑tech startup. The team says the technology originated in Nath’s Applied Photonics and Nanophotonics Laboratory (APN Lab) and built on the PhD research of student Diganta Rabha.
The founders described the project as a journey from fundamental research to an engineered product, including software integration, and noted ongoing exploratory work on AI‑assisted applications for agriculture and healthcare that could extend the device’s utility.
