India-US Trade Deal Imminent — Sergio Gor Reveals Timeline
US Ambassador Sergio Gor said in New Delhi on May 21 that he is “immensely confident” a landmark bilateral trade agreement between the United States and India will be finalised in the “coming weeks and months.” Speaking at the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) India Annual Leadership Summit, Gor said the deal aims to broaden market access and create greater certainty for businesses on both sides.
At the summit, Gor quoted President Trump’s objective, saying: “President Trump’s goal is to facilitate bilateral trade in a way that creates lucrative opportunities for American businesses and workers.” He added that an interim trade agreement is on the table to be finalised and that recent talks have accelerated the process.
Gor noted that an Indian delegation visited Washington, D.C. in April 2026 to advance negotiations, and he said a U.S. delegation is expected to visit India in June 2026 to focus further on the agreement. He described the U.S. goal as completing details that will reduce barriers, strengthen supply chains, catalyse new investment and drive sustained, inclusive growth.
“This agreement, if done right, will strengthen supply chains, catalyse new investments, and drive sustained inclusive growth, bringing tangible benefits to industries, workers, and economies,” Gor said, stressing the economic gains the pact could produce.
Acknowledging the time required to resolve differences, Gor compared the current talks to the lengthy India‑EU negotiations, noting the latter took almost 19 years. He said negotiations between the U.S. and India have been ongoing for about a year and a half and expressed confidence they will conclude soon.
Highlighting deepening economic ties, Gor said Indian firms committed more than USD 20 billion in investments into the United States at the annual Select Investment Summit, and he said the U.S. Embassy in India ranked first globally in facilitating such investment commitments. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, speaking on the sidelines of the AMCHAM summit, confirmed an official U.S. delegation is expected next month and said talks are progressing after meetings in Washington, D.C. in April.
