Soma Somasegar, Microsoft Veteran, Dies at 59 — Silicon Valley Mourns
S. “Soma” Somasegar, a respected Indian-origin technology leader and longtime Microsoft executive who later became a prominent venture investor, died unexpectedly on May 19 at the age of 59, his family and Madrona Venture Group said. The cause of death has not been disclosed. Somasegar had served as a managing director at Seattle-based Madrona for the past 11 years and was widely mourned across the global tech and venture capital communities.
Born in Puducherry, India, Somasegar earned a bachelor’s degree from Anna University in Chennai and a master’s in computer engineering from Louisiana State University before joining Microsoft in January 1989. Over a 27-year career at the company he became a central figure in building its core software platform, contributing to eight major Windows releases and playing a key role in the architecture of Windows NT.
He helped expand Microsoft’s international presence, founding the India Development Center in Hyderabad in 1998. As corporate vice president of the Developer Division, Somasegar oversaw foundational tools used by millions of engineers worldwide, including Visual Studio and the .NET framework-platforms that shaped modern software development practices.
After retiring from Microsoft in 2015, he joined Madrona Venture Group and built a strong track record as an early-stage investor focused on artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud infrastructure and intelligent applications. He was named to the SEED 100 list of top early-stage investors just hours before his death, and had publicly expressed gratitude for the recognition.
News of his passing prompted tributes from top industry figures. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said, “Soma was a remarkable leader who helped grow and shape Microsoft’s developer ecosystem, and a dear friend and colleague that I valued greatly.” Nadella added that Somasegar “brought depth, humility, and a real commitment to empowering developers everywhere,” and that the loss was personal for him and his family.
Colleagues, entrepreneurs and public figures including White House AI adviser Sriram Krishnan remembered Somasegar as a compassionate mentor who spotted and launched young talent out of undergraduate programs. Many noted his steady leadership, practical guidance and long record of mentoring generations of engineers and founders.
Somasegar is survived by his wife, Akila, and their two daughters. The family and Madrona made the announcement; further details have not been released.
