CM Orders Urgent High-Level Probe into GTA Affairs
Suvendu Adhikari, in his first visit to North Bengal since becoming Chief Minister, on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, ordered a high‑level inquiry into files related to the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), saying those involved in corruption “would not be spared” and promising strict action against the guilty. The order came after an administrative meeting held at Uttarkanya that Adhikari chaired from 1 pm with Darjeeling MP Raju Bista, MLAs from the region and senior officials from all seven North Bengal districts.
Adhikari said the probe will examine alleged misuse of public funds and illegal recruitments within the GTA, and will investigate sudden accumulations of unexplained wealth by certain GTA members and municipal commissioners — complaints that followed memorandums from local opposition leaders. He added that a final discussion on GTA matters would be held soon in Kolkata, with MP Raju Bista expected to attend.
Speaking to reporters after arriving at Bagdogra Airport in the morning, Adhikari said, “I will not come here for tours, but to focus on work and development. I will speak less and work more.” He announced that he and his cabinet colleagues will visit North Bengal once every month and that the North Bengal Development minister will sit at Uttarkanya weekly to hear public grievances.
On law and order, Adhikari reiterated a zero‑tolerance stance: “Extortion, hooliganism and any deterioration of law and order will not be tolerated in the State. Those who think they can continue with old practices are mistaken. The law will take its own course.” He said the administrative meeting aimed to fast‑track stalled development projects across the tea belt, the tourism sector and various central and state schemes.
After arriving at Bagdogra around 11 am and visiting the BJP office at Mallaguri, Adhikari proceeded to Uttarkanya for the meeting. Following its conclusion he returned to Kolkata; MPs and MLAs including Raju Bista and Shankar Ghosh briefed the media on the outcomes. Bista said the Chief Minister announced a “North Bengal Development Roadmap” and instructed ministers and MLAs to work sincerely for the region’s overall progress.
Adhikari also reaffirmed his commitment to key electoral promises for North Bengal, including establishing an AIIMS, an IIT and a cancer hospital. Meanwhile, Gorkha Janamukti Morcha chief Bimal Gurung and party secretary Roshan Giri, who sought an appointment at Uttarkanya on Wednesday, were reportedly asked to meet the Chief Minister in Kolkata instead.
