Assam: Advocate Anindita Das Summoned in Bharalumukh Tree-Felling Case
Guwahati-based advocate and environmental activist Anindita Das has been asked to appear before police in a case linked to protests against the felling of trees for a proposed flyover in the Bharalumukh area of Guwahati. Das on Sunday shared a copy of a notice on social media and said police personnel had recently visited her residence while she was not at home. She later learned she had been directed to appear at the Oil Police Station in Golaghat district, the notice shows.
The document names Das as an accused in Case No. PRC 165/26 and lists June 25, 2026, as the next date in the matter. Das said she had earlier secured anticipatory bail from the Gauhati High Court in connection with the case. Describing the development as distressing, she wrote: “For the first time, I will have to stand in the dock.”
The case stems from protests by residents, environmental groups and civil society members who opposed the removal of old-growth and mature trees in Bharalumukh to make way for the flyover. Opponents have argued that large-scale tree felling in Guwahati threatens urban green cover and will have adverse environmental impacts, a concern that has fuelled wider public opposition to similar infrastructure projects.
Despite the notice and ongoing legal proceedings, Das said she remains committed to the campaign against tree felling. The developments place a prominent activist at the centre of a broader debate over urban development, environmental protection and how authorities balance infrastructure needs with conservation of green spaces.
