Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Guwahati on Monday night, May 11, 2026, to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the third BJP-led NDA government in Assam, where Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to be sworn in for a second consecutive term as chief minister. The visit brings national leaders to the state capital for the formal constitution of the new state government.
Modi was received at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport by chief minister-designate Himanta Biswa Sarma and other senior BJP leaders. Officials and party functionaries accorded the prime minister a traditional welcome on arrival.
The new cabinet to be sworn in will include Sarma as chief minister and four other MLAs — two from the BJP and one each from alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF). The oath-taking marks the formal start of the NDA government’s third term in Assam.
Many dignitaries reached Guwahati on Monday and were given customary airport receptions. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president Nitin Nabin were reported to be scheduled to arrive later in the night to participate in the ceremony.
Several central ministers have already arrived for the event, including Rajnath Singh, Sarbananda Sonowal, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Lalan Singh, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Chirag Paswan. Their presence signals strong central participation in the state ceremony.
A number of state chief ministers also travelled to Guwahati for the swearing-in, among them Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Goa’s Pramod Sawant, Rajasthan’s Bhajan Lal Sharma, Bihar’s Samrat Choudhury, Chhattisgarh’s Vishnu Dev Sai, Uttarakhand’s Pushkar Singh Dhami, Maharashtra’s Devendra Fadnavis, Odisha’s Mohan Charan Maji and Madhya Pradesh’s Mohan Yadav.
Chief ministers from other Northeastern states who reached Guwahati include Tripura’s Manik Saha, Nagaland’s Neiphiu Rio, Mizoram’s Lalduhoma, Manipur’s Y Khemchand Singh, Sikkim’s Prem Singh Tamang and Arunachal Pradesh’s Pema Khandu. Several deputy chief ministers from states including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Nagaland, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh were also reported to have arrived for the ceremony.
The prime minister’s attendance and the assembled roster of central and state leaders underscore the political significance attached to the formation of the new Assam government and the NDA’s continued role in the state’s governance.
