Lilong Aspirant’s Urgent Call: Minorities Key to Peace in Manipur
Dr Muhammad Riyajuddin Khan, an intending candidate from the Lilong Assembly Constituency, on May 11 urged immediate steps to restore peace and communal harmony in Manipur, saying minority communities must play a central role as bridges between larger groups to mend social divisions ahead of the state assembly elections. Speaking on the sidelines of a “Developmental Public Discussion” programme in Lilong, Khan said that lasting peace was essential for the overall progress and development of the state.
Addressing residents and participants, Khan argued that minority groups have a unique capacity to ease tensions and facilitate dialogue, and therefore “must act as a bridge between powerful communities.” He framed this role as necessary not only for reconciliation but also for rebuilding public confidence across different communities.
Referring to the prolonged unrest in Manipur, Khan noted that the conflict has persisted for the last three to four years and lamented the absence of a clear roadmap to restore normalcy. “The unrest in Manipur has been going on for the last three to four years, but we still cannot see a clear solution as to when peace will return,” he said.
Khan called for a “unique plan” to revive peace and communal harmony, stressing that meaningful development cannot proceed without stability. “Without peace and harmony in the state, no development can be achieved,” he added, urging stakeholders to prioritise a durable settlement that would enable social and economic recovery.
