Assam Counting Day: Congress-Led Opposition Confident in Guwahati
With counting set for May 4, the Congress-led opposition alliance in Assam held a closed-door strategy meeting in Guwahati on Saturday, saying it was confident the ruling NDA would be voted out when results are declared. Leaders told reporters the gathering focused on final-day preparations and preventing alleged irregularities at counting centres.
The meeting at Hotel Ratnavali brought together senior national and regional figures, including Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Congress observer D.K. Shivakumar, former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, AICC Assam in-charge Jitendra Singh, Assam PCC president Gaurav Gogoi, Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi, Assam Jatiya Parishad president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, several Left leaders and APHLC president John Ingti Kathar. Several senior candidates and party functionaries also attended.
Alliance leaders said they reviewed counting-day logistics, booth-level monitoring and mechanisms to guard against alleged manipulation. They said legal teams and a monitoring system were already in place to ensure transparency and “protect every vote,” according to D.K. Shivakumar.
Gaurav Gogoi argued that voter sentiment had shifted in favour of the opposition and that any attempts to influence polling were being countered by party workers and citizens, with complaints lodged with authorities. He dismissed exit polls favouring the NDA as “misleading and disconnected from ground reality.”
Jitendra Singh alleged misuse of money power and instances of intimidation during the campaign, while also praising the state Congress leadership for a strong fight and questioning the repeated involvement of top BJP leaders in campaigning.
Akhil Gogoi predicted a decisive opposition victory, saying the alliance could cross 70 seats. Lurinjyoti Gogoi rejected projections of a BJP sweep, pointing to past results and “current public anger” as signs of a different trend. APHLC president John Ingti Kathar expressed optimism about the alliance’s prospects in hill districts, saying voters there had backed change after assessing ground realities.
Alliance spokespeople said the meeting aimed to translate perceived voter mood into a transparent count on May 4 and to ensure any disputes are addressed promptly through legal and monitoring channels.
