Historic Win: Assam Tea Body Secures May Day Wages for Temps
The Assam Tea Labour Union (ATLU) secured a major victory for temporary tea garden workers after a dispute resolution meeting at the office of the Assistant Labour Commissioner in Tinsukia resulted in management agreeing to clear pending May Day wages. Union leaders described the outcome as a “historic milestone,” and said the Baghjan Tea Estate has committed to pay the outstanding May 1, 2025 wages within the next one and a half months.
The meeting addressed long-standing grievances of casual workers employed by MK Tea Export Limited at the Daimukhia tea estate (recently renamed Roseberry tea estate) in the Doomdooma constituency and at Baghjan tea estate in the Makum constituency, ATLU general secretary Israil Nanda, who is also senior vice-president of the National Front of Indian Trade Unions, said. For years, temporary workers had been excluded from receiving holiday pay for May 1, even when estates were officially closed.
ATLU credited sustained protests and a year of continuous union effort for forcing management to the negotiating table. Union representatives also praised the impartial intervention of the Assistant Labour Commissioner of Tinsukia, saying the official’s mediation helped deliver justice to the affected workers.
The settlement was reached in a meeting attended by estate management representatives, members of the tea workers’ association and key ATLU leaders, including Garden Unit President Binanda Nanda and Secretary Bilap Nanda. Union officials said the decision could set a precedent across the region, offering renewed hope to thousands of temporary tea workers seeking fair treatment and labour rights.
