Assam CM Pledges to End ‘Reign of Goons and Terror’ in Bengal by May 4

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 20 escalated his criticism of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), accusing the West Bengal government of presiding over a “reign of goons and terror” and saying the situation would change after election results due on May 4. Speaking at a rally in Tamulik, Sarma said the alleged lawlessness “is going to end on May 4,” and warned that those he described as criminals would be forced “to come to the police station and surrender,” adding that “after May 4, there will be no one to save them.”

Sarma also targeted West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the issue of women’s representation, charging that she had “insulted all mothers and sisters by defeating the Women’s Reservation Bill.” His remarks came amid an intensifying exchange of accusations between parties ahead of the state assembly elections, with law and order, corruption and governance central to the campaign rhetoric.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Nitin Nabin echoed Sarma’s tone, saying a “BJP wave” was building across West Bengal and predicting the ouster of the ruling TMC. “Today, there is a BJP wave across West Bengal, and now the time has come for the TMC to be ousted,” Nabin said, citing visible public anger over “corruption, appeasement, and the oppression of women.” He also promised a “double-engine government” under Prime Minister Narendra Modi — a phrase used to describe the same party governing at both the Centre and the state — and accused Banerjee of “deceiving Maa, Mati and Manush.”

West Bengal’s elections are being held in two phases, on April 23 and April 29, with votes to be counted on May 4. The 294-member assembly requires at least 148 seats for a majority. In the previous 2021 assembly poll, the TMC won a decisive victory with 213 seats and a 48.5 percent vote share, while the BJP emerged as the main opposition with 77 seats and a 38.5 percent vote share; smaller parties and independents filled the remainder.

The recent statements from BJP leaders underscore the high-stakes, polarized nature of the campaign as parties press messaging on security, development and social issues in the run-up to counting day.
