Setback to Women’s Dreams: Fight for Leadership & Rights
GANGTOK, April 17, 2026 — Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang‑Golay expressed deep disappointment after the Lok Sabha on Friday failed to pass the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam (Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill), a proposed law that sought to expand the number of seats in the House and introduce one‑third reservation for women in legislatures starting in 2029. The Bill received 298 votes in favour and 230 against after two days of debate but fell short of the two‑thirds majority required for a constitutional amendment.
“I am deeply disheartened that the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam could not be passed in the Lok Sabha despite the hopes and aspirations of millions of women across our country,” the Chief Minister wrote on social media following the vote. He said the outcome was a “setback to the dreams of countless women who seek their rightful place in decision‑making.”
Sikkim had shown strong public support for the Bill, Mr. Tamang‑Golay added, with a large rally held in Gangtok on the morning of April 17 where “mothers, sisters, and daughters came together in large numbers, raising their voices in support of this historic reform.” He described the turnout as reflecting “a powerful belief in equality, dignity, and representation.”
In his post the Chief Minister blamed the Opposition for blocking the measure, accusing it of engaging in “ruthless politics” and deliberately obstructing the Women’s Reservation Bill because political rivals “know who will get the credit” for the reform. “They will face the wrath of the women of this country for their actions,” he warned.
Despite the defeat, Mr. Tamang‑Golay said his government remained committed to the cause. “The voice of women cannot be suppressed, and their aspirations will continue to guide us towards a more just and empowered India,” he wrote, urging continued advocacy for women’s representation.
