Indian Army Boxers Triumph with Eight Medals at Asian Championships
NEW DELHI, April 13 — Indian Army boxers returned from the Asian Boxing Championships in Mongolia with eight medals, including three gold, officials said on Monday, underlining the success of the Army’s sports programme ahead of major international events. The haul comprised three golds, two silvers and three bronzes, with standout performances across both the men’s and women’s divisions.
In the men’s category, Vishwanath Suresh won gold in the 50kg class and Sachin Siwach took silver in the 60kg division. Akash earned bronze in the 75kg category, Lokesh claimed bronze at 85kg and Narender Berwal added a bronze in the +90kg weight class.
Women boxers from the Army also shone: Preeti Pawar captured gold in the 54kg division, Jaismine Lamboria secured silver in the 57kg class, and Arundhati Chaudhary clinched gold in the 70kg category.
“Indian Army boxers trained at the Army Sports Institute under the Indian Army’s Mission Olympics programme delivered an outstanding performance at the Asian Boxing Championship, winning a total of eight medals including three gold, two silver and three bronze medals,” an Army official said, crediting the Institute’s training system.
The Army Sports Institute — described by officials as a premier training establishment under the Mission Olympics initiative — was set up to identify and prepare promising athletes for top international competition. The official said the team’s results reflect the standards of training, discipline and competitive excellence fostered by the Army’s professional sporting ecosystem.
Separately, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad is likely to include two indigenous Indian sports as part of an expanded programme that will also feature staples such as hockey and cricket. A Commonwealth Sport delegation, led by President Donald Rukare and CEO Katie Sadleir, visited Ahmedabad last week to assess preparations and met Mandaviya to discuss timelines and legacy planning for post-Games infrastructure use.
“Kabaddi, Mallakhamb, Kho-Kho, and Yoga are under consideration from among our indigenous sports. Two of them should make the cut,” Mandaviya told reporters, outlining India’s bid to showcase traditional disciplines on the Commonwealth stage. (PTI)
