1.6K Meghalaya Villages Lack Anganwadi Centres — Crisis Revealed

The Estimates Committee of the Meghalaya Assembly on Friday concluded a two‑day review of six departments, flagging gaps in social services and urging faster delivery of key infrastructure projects. The committee, chaired by MLA Mayralborn Syiem, said a detailed report with recommendations — as mandated by the Assembly — will be tabled during the next House session.

A central concern raised was that roughly 1,600 villages in the state lack anganwadi centres. “The committee expressed concern over approximately 1,600 villages lacking anganwadi centres,” Syiem said, and directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to explore ways to establish these centres, including seeking support from the central government despite constraints posed by existing population and household eligibility guidelines.

The panel reviewed the implementation and progress of several education and skill‑development infrastructure projects, including construction works at model degree colleges in Rongjeng and Patharkhmah, upgrades at Kiang Nongbah College, and expansion of polytechnic facilities across Meghalaya. Ongoing and planned PWD building projects — such as the renovation of Meghalaya House and other in‑state and out‑of‑state infrastructure initiatives — were also examined.

On public health engineering, the committee reviewed the Greater Ampati Water Supply Scheme and instructed the PHE department to expedite its completion to improve water access for affected areas. Regarding the home (police) department, members stressed timely completion of police infrastructure projects in line with budgetary provisions from the previous financial year.

The committee welcomed the completion of the IT Park at Umsawli, calling it a potential step toward reducing unemployment. A statement added that last‑mile connectivity for high‑speed internet is in its final stages, with certain areas expected to become operational soon. The committee’s findings and recommendations will inform the Assembly’s next deliberations.
