Assam Assembly Polls Begin: Early Jorhat Turnout Surges, Gogoi Votes
Polling for the Assam Assembly elections began at 7 a.m. on Thursday, with voters across the state turning out early and polling officials in Jorhat describing the start of voting as smooth and orderly. In Jorhat district the exercise was under way at 886 polling stations, and authorities estimated about 7.1 lakh electors were expected to vote, with long queues forming outside several booths by early morning.
Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita cast his ballot at Ward No. 15 in the Jorhat constituency and called the election a celebration of democratic values. “I have cast my vote, and this is the greatest celebration of democracy. I appeal to all citizens to come out and vote for a strong democracy,” he said after voting.
Congress candidate Gaurav Gogoi voted at the 52 No. Polling Centre at DCB Girls School in Jorhat and said the visible turnout strengthened his confidence. “I am extremely confident seeing the turnout. People are showing boldness, taking ownership and responsibility. Power is returning to the people, and that is what we wished for,” Gogoi said.
Young voters were also prominent at polling sites. Pooja Das, voting for the second time, said she hoped the next government would focus on development: “This is my second time voting. I want whoever comes to power to work for the people and focus on development.” Observers said the early enthusiasm pointed to strong civic participation across the district.
