Meghalaya’s Sailing Events at Umiam Spark Sports Tourism Boom
A cluster of back-to-back sailing competitions at Umiam Lake near Shillong has put Meghalaya’s strategy of using sport to drive tourism and infrastructure squarely in the spotlight. Over ten days the reservoir hosted more than 280 sailors, including international competitors, as the inaugural Indian Sailing League (ISL) ran immediately before the 4th North East Regatta. Officials say the sustained schedule was aimed at positioning Umiam as a serious contender in India’s growing water-sports landscape.
The franchise-based ISL featured 182 sailors, including 58 from countries such as Russia, Korea, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. Fourteen teams competed across Olympic and youth categories, and the event carried a prize pool exceeding Rs 1.5 crore-making it one of the largest sailing competitions staged in the country. Bhopal Tritons won the ISL, with Vizag Vikings second and Shillong Umiam Navigators also finishing on the podium.
The North East Regatta, organised in association with the Yachting Association of India, drew more than 100 participants and functioned as a ranking event and qualifying platform for national squads, including crews preparing for continental competitions such as the Asian Games. Organisers said holding both events consecutively helped sustain visibility for Umiam as a competitive venue and provided athletes with high-quality race experience.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma linked the competitions to a wider development plan to transform Umiam into a year-round tourism hub. “We want to tell everybody that Meghalaya has arrived. We are ready, and every activity we do is building up on that larger goal and purpose that we had in front of us,” he said, framing the events as part of a long-term push for sports-led economic growth.
Officials described the initiative as a move toward experience-led tourism focused on attracting higher-value visitors and extending stays. Investments such as the Orchid Water Sports Complex, planned accommodation expansion and efforts to align with national and international sporting calendars were cited as central to the strategy.
Partnerships played a key role: the ISL was organised with the Umiam Sailing Club and the United De Novo Association of Yachting (UDAY), while the regatta involved the national governing body. Organisers credited strong administrative and logistical support from the state for enabling events of this scale.
The push has attracted notice within the sailing community. Admiral Karambir Singh, former Chief of Naval Staff and president of the Yachting Association of India, praised the level of state backing and noted the rapid development of Umiam as a premier venue. Cultural programming, including performances from the Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Grassroots Music Program, further blended sport with local identity.
The events also serve as practical rehearsals ahead of larger targets: preparations for the 2027 National Games and ambitions tied to India’s 2036 Olympic bid. Officials view such back-to-back competitions as tests of infrastructure readiness and event-management capacity as Meghalaya seeks to build a long-term sports tourism ecosystem centered on youth engagement, tourism and sport.
