Manipur CM Orders NIA Probe After Bishnupur Blast Kills Two Children
The National Investigation Agency (NIA will take over the probe into a bomb blast in Bishnupur district that killed two young children, Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh announced on April 7. The explosion in Moirang Tronglaobi occurred at around 1 a.m.; a five-year-old boy and a six-month-old girl died and their mother was injured.
At a press briefing, Singh described the incident as “a cruel act” and said it appeared to be carried out by groups or individuals trying to disrupt peace in the state. He said the decision to involve the NIA followed consultations with state officials and local lawmakers.
Authorities said militants reportedly threw a bomb into the house while the family slept. The suspects have not been identified, Singh added, and a large-scale search operation is under way to apprehend those responsible.
State police teams are operating alongside units of the Assam Rifles and the CRPF, with aerial surveillance deployed to support the search. Singh urged residents to remain calm, avoid acting in anger and cooperate with security personnel as normalcy is restored, saying the attackers seemed intent on creating unrest.
The blast triggered violent protests in several areas. In Tronglaobi, demonstrators set fire to two oil tankers and a truck near a petrol station, burned tires outside the local police station and damaged a temporary police post.
Protests spread to parts of Imphal, where roads were blocked and vehicles stopped, causing widespread disruption. State Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam reported that clashes during the unrest left two people dead and five others injured after a group attacked a CRPF camp in Bishnupur; protesters also set vehicles ablaze and damaged sections of the camp in anger over the children’s deaths.
