World Cup Controversy: Bulbul Ousted — Shocking Fallout
Dhaka, April 7 — Bangladesh’s National Sports Council (NSC) on April 7 removed Aminul Islam Bulbul as president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and installed an 11‑member ad‑hoc committee led by former captain Tamim Iqbal to run the board’s day‑to‑day affairs until fresh elections are held within 90 days. The move comes days after the BCB reportedly reached out to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) seeking to revive bilateral ties, and follows a public governance crisis linked to the recent T20 World Cup.
According to sources within the BCB, Bulbul’s dismissal was prompted by a turbulence during the World Cup when former interim government adviser Asif Nazrul allegedly prevented the team’s planned visit to India and effectively isolated Bulbul. Sources say Nazrul, whom they describe as an anti‑India hardliner, had pushed to move Bangladesh’s matches from Kolkata and Mumbai to Sri Lanka in protest over the reported removal of Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL.
BCB insiders told reporters that Bulbul had largely been a bystander during the dispute and that his handling of the episode led to the resignation of six board directors in recent days. The NSC appointed Tamim Iqbal as head of the interim committee; its stated mandate is to organise and oversee BCB elections within the 90‑day window.
NSC Director Aminul Ehsan said the decision to dissolve the existing BCB board and install an ad‑hoc committee has been communicated to the International Cricket Council (ICC). While the ICC’s charter bars government or external interference in the affairs of member boards, the NSC noted it has provided a clear timetable for elections, a step that could reduce the likelihood of ICC sanctions.
The 11‑member committee comprises Tamim Iqbal (president), Athar Ali Khan, Rashna Imam, Mirza Yasir Abbas, Syed Ibrahim Ahmed, Minhazul Abedin Nannu, Ishrafil Khusroo, Tanzim Choudhury, Salman Ispahani, Rafiqul Islam and Fahim Sinha. (PTI)
