Transforming Lives: Telangana Expands Emergency and Chronic Healthcare Beyond Hyderabad, Offering Vital Cancer Care and Dialysis Services in Every District!

Telangana is making significant strides to decentralize critical healthcare services, aiming to provide accessible treatment options closer to home. As part of a broader initiative commemorated on World Health Day, April 7, state health officials announced plans to enhance healthcare delivery across district hospitals in a bid to reduce patient travel and bolster public health systems.

One of the focal points of this initiative is the treatment of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). With rising cases of hypertension, diabetes, and cancer, the government has established clinics in every district. Specifically, cancer care is undergoing substantial decentralization. Telangana reports around 60,000 new cancer diagnoses annually, prompting the creation of day-care cancer centres in all district headquarters. These facilities enable patients to receive chemotherapy locally, minimizing the necessity to travel to Hyderabad. Plans are also in motion to launch four regional cancer care centres aimed at improving screening and treatment accessibility.

In addition to cancer services, the state is expanding dialysis care. Over the past two years, 16 new dialysis centres and an additional 120 beds have been added, raising the total to 102 centres to meet increasing demand. This effort aims to cut down waiting times for patients needing this critical treatment.

Emergency medical services are also evolving. The launch of 213 new ambulances has streamlined response times, reducing them from 20 minutes to 14 in tribal areas and from 18 to 13 minutes in rural zones. An additional 77 ambulances are on the horizon, with an ambitious goal of achieving a national standard of a 10-minute response time in emergencies.

The government is also addressing specialized healthcare needs through various targeted programs. Maitri Clinics have been set up across all districts to support the transgender community with medical care, counselling, and even free gender-affirming surgeries at Osmania General Hospital. Geriatric clinics are being introduced in government hospitals to cater to the healthcare needs of the elderly population.

On the diagnostic front, the T-Diagnostics network has seen an expansion. The number of available tests has increased from 57 to 134 across a central hub and 31 district-level hubs, covering all 33 districts. Additionally, mini diagnostic centres are being established to offer free radiology services.

To ensure a stable supply of medications, the government has also set up 22 new Central Medicinal Stores, bringing the total to 33 and ensuring that every district has sufficient access to essential medicines.

As Telangana continues to bolster its healthcare infrastructure, the emphasis remains on reducing the burden of travel and improving the quality of care. The government’s comprehensive strategy reflects a commitment to enhancing healthcare access and outcomes for all citizens, a crucial step in fostering a healthier future for the state.

This ongoing transformation in Telangana’s healthcare landscape underscores the importance of community-centered approaches in public health, highlighting a commitment to meet the diverse needs of the population effectively.
