Rizvi Inspires: DC Clinch Thrilling Win Over MI in IPL
Sameer Rizvi’s blistering 90 off 51 balls powered Delhi Capitals to a six-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in New Delhi on April 4, as the 22-year-old impact substitute tore through the MI attack to chase down 163 with 11 balls to spare. Rizvi struck seven fours and seven sixes, first steadying the chase after an early wobble and then taking charge after Pathum Nissanka’s dismissal to dominate the middle overs.
Delhi were steadied by a 66-run third-wicket stand between Rizvi and Nissanka (44 off 30), and Rizvi later put on a reported 78-run partnership with David Miller (17 not out) to see the hosts home. He exploded with 20 runs off Corbin Bosch’s 11th over and followed with successive sixes off Mayank Markande, narrowly missing a debut IPL century before Bosch eventually dismissed him to a standing ovation.
Mumbai had earlier posted a modest 162 for 6, despite a patient half-century from stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav. Suryakumar anchored the innings with a 36-ball 51 that included three fours and two sixes, and added 53 with Rohit Sharma (35) as MI recovered from early losses. Naman Dhir contributed 28 while other batters struggled to build big scores.
Delhi’s bowlers kept the scoring in check throughout. Captain Axar Patel was economical and influential, conceding just 22 runs in four overs and removing Rohit. Leg-spinner Vipraj Nigam (1/24 in 3 overs) and left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav (0/31 in 3) also bowled key spells, while the pace trio of Mukesh Kumar (2/26), Lungi Ngidi (1/34) and T. Natarajan (1/24) shared four wickets. Mukesh struck early, accounting for Ryan Rickelton and then producing the return catch to dismiss Tilak Varma for a duck.
Suryakumar and Naman tried to shift momentum late, targeting Kuldeep and collecting 15 off the 15th over, but Ngidi trapped Suryakumar lbw shortly after he brought up his fifty. Natarajan removed Naman in the death overs as MI lost wickets at regular intervals.
Brief scores: Mumbai Indians 162 for 6 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 51, Rohit Sharma 35; Mukesh Kumar 2/26). Delhi Capitals 164 for 4 in 18.1 overs (Sameer Rizvi 90, Pathum Nissanka 44; Deepak Chahar 1/20). (PTI)
