US President Donald Trump warned on Truth Social that Iran has “48 hours” before it faces severe consequences, reiterating a deadline he set after saying he had given Tehran 10 days to either “make a deal” with Washington or “open up the Hormuz Strait.” Trump wrote: “Remember when I gave Iran ten days to MAKE A DEAL or OPEN UP THE HORMUZ STRAIT. Time is running out – 48 hours before all Hell will reign down on them. Glory be to GOD!”
Trump made the warning after saying on March 26 that he had extended an initial seven-day pause on U.S. strikes against Iranian energy infrastructure to 10 days at Tehran’s request, moving the deadline to April 6. He told Fox News that Iranian officials had asked for more time “very nicely, through my people,” and that if Tehran failed to act he would “knock out their power plants.” He also said, “They asked for seven, and I said, ‘I’m going to give you 10,’ because they gave me ships.”
The White House proposal to end the immediate escalation has been dismissed by Iranian officials as “one-sided and unfair,” according to Trump’s account. Experts cited in the original reporting note that attacks targeting civilian energy infrastructure can amount to war crimes, underscoring legal and humanitarian risks if strikes occur.
Meanwhile, Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, issued a veiled warning about another strategic chokepoint, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait at the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, which handles roughly a quarter of container traffic to and from the Suez Canal. Ghalibaf questioned global dependence on the strait for shipments of oil, LNG, wheat, rice and fertiliser, and asked which countries and companies account for the highest transit volumes, adding a thinking-face emoji to his post.
The developments highlight rising tensions over Gulf waterways and energy infrastructure, and the potential for broader disruption to global shipping and supplies if diplomatic efforts fail to resolve the standoff.
