BJP Fields Six in Sikkim Civic Polls amid Opposition Boycott
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded six candidates for Sikkim’s upcoming civic body elections, with all nominees submitting their nomination papers on the final day, March 30. Elections are scheduled for April 24 across 63 wards in the state’s urban local bodies, with vote counting set for April 25. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on April 2 and the last date for withdrawal is April 4.
The six BJP candidates include Srijana Chettri, who filed from the Diesel Power House ward of the Gangtok Municipal Corporation; Pempo Dorjee Lepcha and Rajani Singh Cintury, who submitted nominations from Singtam Nagar Panchayat; Bhopal Baraily from Rangpo Nagar Panchayat; and Sangay Bhutia and Naren Subba from Namchi and Soreng respectively.
State BJP president DR Thapa said he is confident of the party’s performance and indicated that all six candidates will remain in the fray despite challenges posed by a newly implemented reservation structure for seats.
The ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) has put forward candidates in all 63 wards. Opposition parties, including the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) and the Citizen Action Party (CAP), have announced a boycott of the polls, alleging irregularities in how seats were reserved and describing the process as partisan.
The BJP’s late-day nominations, the full-fielding by SKM, and the opposition boycott over reservation disputes set the stage for a contentious urban local body election in Sikkim, with the withdrawal and scrutiny windows now key to finalizing the contesting line-up.
