IPL 2026: Will Virat Kohli Unleash His Deadliest Form?
Virat Kohli arrives at IPL 2026 as the tournament’s all-time leading run-scorer and, fresh off finally lifting the IPL trophy with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2025, appears poised to enter the season with a new, unburdened freedom that could make him particularly dangerous. After an 18-year wait to add the IPL title to his long list of honours, Kohli has little left to prove to fans or critics — which observers say allows him to play with the spontaneity and aggression that defined his best years.
Kohli’s resume already included major ICC honours — the U19 World Cup, the Cricket World Cup, the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy — and the IPL crown completed a career-long checklist. He has spoken openly about the mental strain of leadership: on RCB’s podcast diaries he said, “I captained India for 7–8 years and RCB for nine. There were expectations of me as a batter every single game… It got very tough and too much in the end.” Stepping away from captaincy in 2021, he reclaimed a role focused purely on batting and expression.
That change is reflected in recent numbers. Since 2021 Kohli has posted seasons of 341 (2022), 639 (2023), 741 (2024) and 657 (2025) runs, and his outstanding 2016 campaign — 973 runs in 16 innings with four centuries — remains among the sport’s landmark T20 performances. He has won two Orange Caps, in 2016 and 2024, underscoring his sustained dominance across different eras of the league.
Kohli has also translated franchise success into international form. After the 2025 IPL triumph he returned to India duty against South Africa and produced back-to-back ODI centuries, a sign to many that his peak instincts are intact. Former teammate Ravichandran Ashwin warned rival franchises in December, saying teams “should be really concerned if Virat comes with an open mindset,” a blunt reminder of the threat he poses.
As a former RCB captain — he led the side in 143 matches for 66 wins, 70 losses, three ties and four no results — Kohli’s impact runs beyond numbers: his presence sets standards and raises expectations. With the IPL trophy finally in his cabinet and the pressure of legacy eased, IPL 2026 could well see Virat Kohli at his most liberated and, consequently, most dangerous.
