Guwahati, March 25 — The eighth day of the Jan Ashirwad Yatra turned contentious in Sorbhog on Wednesday after two alleged BJP workers reportedly snatched and tore placards held by four students who were demanding justice for Assamese cultural icon Zubeen Garg. The incident occurred during the second phase of the yatra, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, as the procession passed through the Bhawanipur–Sorbhog belt.
According to student bodies, the four youths-who identified themselves as ardent fans and staged a brief, peaceful protest with handwritten placards along the yatra route-had their placards forcibly taken and torn by the alleged workers, escalating the situation.
Speaking at a press conference after the incident, a leader of the Barnagar Regional Student Union said the protesters “were not affiliated with any political party and were simply fans of the late cultural icon. However, some BJP miscreant workers snatched the placards and tore them apart.” The leader urged authorities to treat the matter seriously.
Student leaders condemned the act and demanded immediate police action and a thorough investigation. “We strongly condemn this act and urge the police to immediately arrest those involved. We also request the Chief Minister to take note of the incident and ensure such actions are not repeated,” the student leader added.
The development follows Day 7 of the yatra, when Chief Minister Sarma campaigned in the same belt backing BJP candidate Ranjit Dass and addressed public gatherings to highlight development initiatives ahead of the Assembly polls.
