Explosive Audio, Chats: Bengaluru Cop Accused of Harassment
Bengaluru, March 25 — Audio clips and messages that allegedly show a Bengaluru police inspector harassing a woman with a criminal record have gone viral, prompting a complaint to the city police commissioner and embarrassment for the force. The woman accuses Inspector Papanna, posted at Konanakunte police station, of repeatedly sending vulgar WhatsApp messages and pressuring her to “entertain” him.
The victim has urged swift action, saying earlier complaints to the police produced no results. She alleges the accused told her he could not be touched because his wife is a close relative of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. “The police had initiated action against me recently, and they are not taking any action against the accused cop, even as all evidence is submitted,” she wrote in her complaint.
According to the complaint, Papanna sent messages calling her “very sexy” and professing love. She says the harassment dates back to 2016, when the inspector summoned her for an inquiry and asked for her phone number. “When a cop asks for my contact number, I will have to provide it. He started sending good morning and good night messages,” she said, adding that the messages grew more explicit in February 2017.
The woman also alleges threats and repeated phone calls. She says she received a threat after approaching a deputy commissioner of police and that callers warned her husband their children would be killed. “For three months, Papanna has been calling me frequently and harassing me. He says he will come to my house and prepare chicken, and will also feed me,” the complaint states.
The complainant says Papanna has been suspended twice but returned to duty each time and is reportedly in line for promotion to assistant commissioner, a claim she cites as evidence he can evade consequences. “He should be punished. If he is suspended, he will get it revoked. He will continue to exploit women,” she wrote, adding that she holds an MBA and “American University has awarded me Phd.”
Police records cited in the report say the woman is a rowdy-sheeter registered at Basavanagudi police station and was recently arrested under the Karnataka Control of Organised Crimes Act, 2000 (KCOCA) in connection with the alleged kidnapping of a prominent real estate businessman. Authorities say she faces about 10 cases across various Bengaluru police stations.
The viral audio and message screenshots have put the police department under scrutiny. The allegations remain under investigation and the accused inspector is referred to as such pending official action. — IANS
