The Union government has called for an all-party meeting today at 5 PM to address the escalating crisis in West Asia, according to news agencies. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to chair the session, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also in attendance. This meeting emerges amid rising tensions in the region that have posed risks to critical maritime routes and heightened concerns for the safety of Indian nationals working in Gulf countries.
The urgency of the situation has prompted a series of high-level discussions within the Indian government. Just this Tuesday, Singh chaired an earlier meeting that included Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, the service chiefs, and DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir Kamat, focusing on the evolving conditions in the Middle East. Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a Cabinet Committee on Security meeting on Sunday to assess the ongoing conflict and evaluate necessary mitigation measures.
In the wake of these discussions, Prime Minister Modi has established seven empowered groups to address the impacts of the Iran-Israel-U.S. conflict, specifically concerning fuel supply chains and fertilization strategies. During his address to the Rajya Sabha, he emphasized the crucial need for India to remain united and prepared, drawing parallels to the solidarity exhibited during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As the conflict marks its fourth week, disruptions in trade routes-particularly through the Strait of Hormuz-are becoming increasingly concerning. The situation escalated notably after the recent military strikes by the U.S. and Israel, which purportedly resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has since retaliated by targeting Israeli and U.S. assets across various Gulf nations, further destabilizing maritime traffic and impacting global energy markets.
Interestingly, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, announced he would not attend the all-party meeting due to a prior engagement in Kerala. His party, Congress, has criticized Prime Minister Modi’s approach to the crisis, labeling his statements as a “prepared text full of self-praise” for achievements over his 11 years in office.
Modi’s recent addresses underline the strategic importance of West Asia to India, noting that approximately one crore Indians reside and work in Gulf countries, with many involved in maritime operations. “Given these diverse concerns, it’s vital that a unified voice from India’s Parliament be conveyed to the world regarding this crisis,” he remarked.
Further, Modi highlighted his ongoing dialogue with international leaders. On March 24, he discussed the West Asia situation with President Trump, expressing India’s commitment to de-escalation and the restoration of peace. “Ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, secure, and accessible is essential for the entire world,” he stated, reaffirming the need for sustained communication aimed at fostering stability.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on the outcomes of today’s meeting and the implications it holds for India’s diplomatic and security strategies in response to the conflict in West Asia.
