Transforming Lives: NGO dilgiparangko rim·anio Sorkari jaksugala
The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) has urged the state government, including Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, to intervene after recent police action in Garo Hills that, according to local NGOs, resulted in the detention of activists and heightened tensions in parts of the district. CoMSO and allied organisations say the incidents have targeted members of pressure groups and local civil-society actors and called for prompt government investigation and accountability.
NGOs from Garo Hills told CoMSO leaders that police operations had included arrests and questioning of those involved in community and advocacy work. They demanded that the Superintendent of Police explain the rationale for these actions and that the Chief Minister ensure an impartial review. CoMSO vice-president Sambormi Lyngdoh pressed for an urgent meeting between the government and the affected organisations to address the allegations and prevent further escalation.
Among those reported detained were Johnny A. Marak, identified with ACHIK, and Balkarin Marak of the Garo State Movement Committee (GSMC). CoMSO said the detentions have contributed to a tense atmosphere, particularly in West Garo Hills, and warned that ongoing restrictions on civic activity risk undermining community trust and social stability.
Civil society groups represented by CoMSO argued that the state must safeguard the right of NGOs and community bodies to operate without intimidation. They called on authorities to allow constructive engagement, restore normalcy, and take steps to protect democratic space in the region. CoMSO urged the government to open dialogue with concerned organisations and to take corrective action where state agencies have overstepped, so that humanitarian and civic work can continue without fear of harassment.
