Explained: How It Works & What It Means for Consumers
Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has launched a 24×7 self‑service LPG vending machine-commonly called a “Gas ATM”—at Central Park Flower Valley in Sohna Sector 33, Gurugram, as a pilot for the Delhi‑NCR region. The automated kiosk lets residents swap empty cylinders for filled ones through a contactless process designed to ease access to cooking fuel amid ongoing supply volatility. Customers register with a mobile number, verify via one‑time password, scan the on‑machine QR code and complete payment by UPI or debit card; the machine dispenses a replenished cylinder within moments.
The system uses modern composite cylinders made of fiber‑based material that weigh about 15 kg-roughly half the weight of traditional 30 kg steel containers-making handling easier for households. These composite units are translucent, allowing users to visually check remaining gas and better plan refills, reducing uncertainty common with metal cylinders.
The Gas ATM can hold up to ten cylinders and includes an intelligent inventory management feature that sends an automatic restock alert to the local agency when stocks fall to two units. Operated round the clock, the facility aims to provide continuous access even when conventional supply channels face disruption. Public awareness of the pilot remains limited, and BPCL and local partners are still in early stages of outreach and monitoring.
The launch comes against a backdrop of strained LPG supply in India, which imports a significant portion of its cooking gas needs; disruptions in key maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz have tightened flows. As the government prioritizes household supplies, the commercial sector has seen shortages. If the Gurugram pilot proves reliable and popular, the Gas ATM model could offer a scalable blueprint for other Indian cities seeking to reduce the domestic impact of global energy fluctuations.
