Congress Protests Assam LPG Price Rise, Targets Centre
The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, announced a statewide protest campaign for Thursday, March 19, 2026, against a steep rise in LPG cylinder prices, accusing the Centre of placing an “unjustified economic burden” on households and demanding immediate relief. The party said the demonstrations will be peaceful and held in marketplaces and other prominent public places to maximise visibility and public participation.
In an official circular, APCC General Secretary Pradyut Bhuyan directed all District Congress Committees to organise the protests across Assam on March 19, 2026. The party said its district units have been instructed to mobilise members and supporters and to stage demonstrations in locations where they expect the greatest public turnout.
The move comes amid what the APCC described as growing public discontent over recent hikes in both domestic and commercial LPG cylinder prices and an alleged “acute shortage” of cylinders that, the party says, has further strained household budgets already affected by persistent inflation. The circular warned of “severe hardships inflicted on the common people of Assam” and called for a strong, unified public voice demanding immediate relief.
Acting on the directive of APCC President Gaurav Gogoi, the party has activated its grassroots network across districts to ensure widespread mobilisation. Party leaders told local units the protests are intended to highlight what they allege is the central government’s failure to stabilise prices of essential commodities and to press authorities to roll back the increases.
The APCC has distributed protest placards to its district units, signalling a coordinated and visually assertive campaign. By targeting busy market areas, the party aims to amplify public dissent, draw attention to fuel affordability and supply issues, and increase pressure on policymakers to address both price rises and reported shortages.
