Urgent: Cachar Labels 95 Polling Stations ‘Critical’, Boosts Security
Silchar, March 17 — The Cachar district administration has designated 95 of its 1,732 polling stations as “critical” and rolled out a comprehensive preparedness plan to ensure a secure, transparent and high‑turnout election, officials said on Tuesday. The measures include increased security deployments, targeted surveillance and a change in polling personnel logistics across all seven Assembly constituencies.
At an all‑party meeting at the District Commissioner’s conference hall, District Commissioner and District Election Officer Aayush Garg said 35 of the 95 stations were flagged after a detailed review of past electoral data showed “unusually high voter turnout” and skewed voting patterns. “Of Cachar’s 1,732 polling stations, 95 have been identified as critical following a detailed review of past electoral data and security assessments. Of these, 35 polling stations were flagged based on unusually high voter turnout exceeding 90% and skewed voting patterns favouring a single candidate, prompting authorities to bring them under enhanced surveillance,” he said.
The remaining 60 stations have been classified as sensitive based on inputs from police and intelligence agencies, Garg added. As a logistical shift, polling personnel for all constituencies will now be dispatched simultaneously two days before polling, replacing the earlier phased deployment; officials say the change will streamline arrangements and improve on‑ground preparedness.
Security measures already include the deployment of 12 companies of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) in the district, with additional forces to be requisitioned if needed. In connectivity‑challenged areas, 18 polling stations will be monitored via CCTV. Nearly 400 polling stations will be staffed entirely by women as part of a push for gender inclusivity.
The administration is also aiming to raise voter turnout from 81% in 2021 to around 85% this time, targeting increased participation among 18‑plus voters. “We are expecting an increase by 2–3%… Overall, our target is to touch 85% turnout this time,” Garg said.
Dedicated monitoring teams of police and civil administration officials will track and act against false or provocative content during the poll period, officials said, describing the combined measures as necessary to protect electoral integrity and encourage voter participation.
