Mizoram Governor Calls for Local Insights to Drive Policy Change
Mizoram Governor Vijay Kumar Singh on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, told a visiting research delegation at Lok Bhavan in Aizawl that policy decisions must be rooted in a clear understanding of “local dynamics” and on-the-ground realities to avoid errors of judgment. The observation came during an interaction with a 12-member multidisciplinary team from the Centre for Contemporary China Studies (CCCS), led by Joint Secretary Aparna Ray.
The CCCS, a think tank under the Ministry of External Affairs, is on a 10-day tour of Northeast India to study conditions along the India–Myanmar border and to gather perspectives from local civil and security administrations. Mizoram shares a 510-kilometre border with Myanmar, making local insights particularly relevant to strategic and development planning.
Singh described Mizoram as a “well-organised society” and one of India’s most peaceful states, noting strong political stability and limited inter-tribal rivalry. He acknowledged the state’s revenue shortfall tied to its agriculture-heavy economy but said Mizoram is “progressing steadily” with a focused push on infrastructure development.
Highlighting recent connectivity gains, the Governor said the extension of the railway line to Sairang has for the first time linked Aizawl to the national railway network. He outlined plans to further extend lines into southern Mizoram to connect with the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project, a move he said would boost regional integration and mobility.
Singh added that the railway expansion, together with the Central Government’s Vibrant Villages Programme for border infrastructure, is expected to significantly transform the northeastern region. The CCCS delegation shared its preliminary observations during the session as part of its fact-finding tour.
