The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) on Monday announced candidates for seven constituencies in the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly election, scheduled for April 9, 2026, naming party president and former Bodoland Territorial Region chief executive Pramod Boro as its nominee from No. 43 Tamulpur (ST). The announcement came as the Election Commission enforced the Model Code of Conduct and election activity across the state increased.
Confirming the slate, UPPL’s central executive committee and its core committee recommended the nominations and Boro approved them, party sources said. According to the list formally released by party general secretary (administration) Raju Kumar Narzary, Anind Basumatari will contest No. 1 Gossaigaon, Raju Kumar Narzary will stand from No. 2 Dotma (ST), and Lawrence Islary will run from No. 3 Kokrajhar (ST). The party has also fielded Nershon Boro in No. 45 Bhergaon, Dipen Boro in No. 46 Udalguri (ST), and Komalsing Narzary in No. 20 Bijni.
Beyond nominations, UPPL has signalled a possible realignment in the run-up to the polls by discussing an exit from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Party leaders disclosed after a core committee meeting in Kokrajhar on March 15 that internal deliberations are underway. UPPL members say the party sent a letter to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s state president on March 10 seeking engagement, but received no response, prompting further consultations on whether to leave the alliance.
Addressing reporters, general secretary Raju Kumar Narzary said the core committee had extensively discussed the matter and that “an official announcement on the party’s decision will be made very soon.” He added that UPPL has already launched election rallies across the region and vowed to respect voters’ wishes: “The people’s decision will be our final decision. Whatever the people decide, the party will accept it.”
Emphasizing the party’s focus on sustaining power balance in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), Narzary noted public dissatisfaction with some legislators’ performance and growing pressure on elected representatives. UPPL leaders expressed cautious optimism about their prospects in the coming days as campaigning intensifies ahead of the April 9 vote.
