Pramod Boro to Contest Tamulpur; UPPL Unveils 7 for Assam Polls
The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) on March 15 issued its candidate list for seven constituencies ahead of the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly election scheduled for April 9, naming party president Pramod Boro among those contesting and signalling possible withdrawal from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The nominations were approved by UPPL president and former Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) chief executive member Pramod Boro after recommendations from the party’s Central Working Committee and Core Committee.
The party named Aninda Basumatary for 1 No. Gossaigaon, Raju Kumar Narzary for 2 No. Dotma (ST), Lawrence Islary for 3 No. Kokrajhar (ST), and Pramod Boro himself for 43 No. Tamulpur (ST). UPPL also nominated Nerswn Boro for 45 No. Bhergaon, Dipen Boro for 46 No. Udalguri (ST), and Kamalsingh Narzary for 20 No. Bijni. The list was formally released for public circulation by Raju Kumar Narzary in his capacity as UPPL General Secretary (Administration), who is also the party’s Dotma nominee.
The announcement comes as the Election Commission’s Model Code of Conduct is in force across Assam and parties intensify campaigning. UPPL leaders said the party’s core committee, meeting in Kokrajhar on March 15, discussed the prospect of exiting the NDA ahead of the polls. Party sources said UPPL had sent a letter on March 10 to the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) but received no response, prompting internal discussions about alliance withdrawal.
Speaking to the media, General Secretary Raju Kumar Narzary said the issue was taken up at the core committee meeting and that an official decision was expected on March 16. He added that the party has already begun road rallies across the region and that the final course will reflect public will. “Whatever decision the people make, we will accept it. We have left it upon them,” he said, later adding, “We are hopeful for the best.”
Narzary also stressed the UPPL’s aim to maintain the balance of power in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), noting voters often turn to MLAs when dissatisfied with their MCLAs. The party’s nominations and its stance on the NDA will shape campaigning dynamics in the BTR and neighbouring constituencies as Assam moves closer to polling on April 9.
