The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) is poised to receive approval from the multi-departmental committee to host the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. This follows the implementation of extensive safety measures recommended by a one-man judicial inquiry led by former High Court judge Michael Cunha. Home Minister G. Parameshwara is expected to make an official announcement regarding this decision on Monday, March 16, following a meeting where the committee will submit its final report.
Sources indicate that matches are likely to take place with full spectator capacity, although there may be a minor reduction in seating availability. The return of high-stakes matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is significant; the last notable event occurred on June 4, 2025, when 11 fans tragically lost their lives during a stampede at a Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebration.
In light of this incident, cricket fans can expect a host of new safety protocols at the stadium. Entry will be restructured, with fans passing through two layers of security gates as part of major modifications to the venue. The introduction of multiple no-entry points and revised gate numbers aims to enhance safety and ease congestion, particularly along Queen’s Road, which has long been a bottleneck during matches. A committee source emphasized that “our main focus is spectator safety,” noting, “this will require fans to unlearn several things, beginning with entry points.”
The IPL is set to kick off on March 28, with defending champions RCB facing off against their rivals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, in the inaugural match. Five RCB games will occur in Bengaluru throughout the 2026 season. During a sub-committee inspection on March 3, it was noted that while the KSCA had initially lagged in implementing safety recommendations, a recent mock walk-through revealed substantial progress. M. Maheshwar Rao, heading the main committee from the Greater Bengaluru Authority, reported that most necessary adjustments are nearing completion.
“Several works have been completed, and some require only minor finishing touches,” a committee member stated, adding that once the remaining tasks are finalized, additional safety drills are scheduled for March 23 and 26. These drills will allow for further suggestions and modifications if necessary.
Key changes for fans include updated entry procedures. Spectators will now be allowed entry solely through gates along Link Road and Cubbon Road, with a new numbering system in place. After passing through a first point of entry, attendees will undergo security checks and walk through a Metal Door Frame Detector before advancing to a secondary gate. For instance, an individual using Gate P will proceed through a further designated gate, P-1, and then enter a large holding area before reaching the stands.
The KSCA has been directed to clearly detail all new rules and conditions on match tickets, with information also available online to ensure fans are well-informed. While some changes posed challenges, alternative arrangements have been established, and all temporary mechanical installations have passed safety checks.
In a recent joint session, KSCA representatives provided a thorough presentation on the measures they have adopted, while RCB officials discussed their operational readiness. KSCA spokesperson Vinay Mruthyunjaya affirmed that “the discussions were constructive and positive,” highlighting a shared commitment among stakeholders to uphold safety and quality during the matches.
