Day 12: Iran War — US-Israel Attacks Intensify, What Next?
Iran says more than 1,300 civilians have been killed and nearly 10,000 civilian sites struck by US and Israeli forces since the conflict began on February 28, as the United States–Israeli campaign entered its 12th day. Tehran reported overnight strikes on targets including Mehrabad Airport on Tuesday and said it continued retaliatory attacks on Israeli and US assets across the Gulf, a cycle of strikes that has pushed global energy prices higher.
The Iranian government and military have accused Israel of attacking civilian infrastructure, and the Iranian Red Crescent said rescue teams were digging through rubble after a residential building was hit. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it struck a Liberia‑flagged vessel it described as Israeli‑owned and a Thai bulk carrier in the Strait of Hormuz after the ships ignored warnings.
Tehran said its armed forces attacked key Israeli sites — including military intelligence headquarters, a naval base in Haifa and radar installations — and targeted US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain. The World Health Organization warned that fires at Iranian fuel depots have mixed with rain to produce contaminated “black rain,” posing potential public‑health risks.
Gulf states reported multiple interceptions and strikes. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE and Oman said they repelled waves of missiles and drones; the UAE reported intercepting 26 drones though several fell inside its territory. UK Maritime Trade Operations said at least two commercial vessels were hit near Dubai and in the Strait of Hormuz. Financial firms including Citi and PwC evacuated or closed Gulf offices amid the threat.
The Pentagon said about 140 US service members have been wounded and seven killed since the launch of Operation Epic Fury, with an eighth service member later dying from a health‑related incident in Kuwait. US President Donald Trump said the campaign could end soon, adding, “there is nothing left” for US forces to hit and “any time I want it to end, it will end.” The White House said US strikes have hit more than 5,000 targets in Iran, while a military investigation is underway into a strike on an Iranian girls’ school that reportedly killed roughly 175 students; the administration said it will accept the probe’s findings amid photographic evidence suggesting a US missile may have been involved.
In Israel, authorities said Iranian missiles were intercepted and air‑raid sirens sounded across central areas. Israel’s cybersecurity directorate reported numerous breaches of security cameras it attributed to Iranian actors. US media reported Washington told Israel it was displeased with strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure and urged restraint — a claim Al Jazeera said it could not independently verify.
The fighting has spread to neighbouring theatres. Lebanese officials say at least 634 people have been killed in intensified Israeli strikes, and more than 800,000 people have been displaced in Lebanon. Iran has demanded justice at the UN after an Israeli strike in Beirut killed four Iranian diplomats. Iraqi officials warned against using Iraqi territory as a launchpad for attacks after strikes hit sites linked to the Popular Mobilisation Forces.
Diplomatic calls for de‑escalation are growing. Qatar’s foreign ministry urged Iran and the US to return to negotiations, saying the hostilities “benefit no one,” even as the region braces for further military and economic fallout.
