Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Biren Singh Engti died on Tuesday morning at the age of 90. He passed away at about 7:46 a.m. at Health City Hospital in Guwahati, where he had been undergoing treatment.
A veteran politician from Diphu, Engti represented the Diphu Lok Sabha constituency seven times and was regarded as one of the most influential voices from Assam’s hill districts. During his long public career he also served as a Union Minister of State in the Government of India.
According to family sources, Engti fell unconscious at his residence in Diphu on Monday after reportedly suffering a pressure-related health complication. He was immediately taken to Guwahati for medical care, but doctors were unable to save him.
Engti was widely respected for his decades-long service and his efforts to represent the interests of people from the hill areas of Assam. A senior leader of the Indian National Congress, he remained closely associated with the party for most of his public life.
He is survived by two sons and a daughter. Family members said his mortal remains will be brought from Guwahati to his residence in Diphu, where they will be kept for three days to allow people to pay their last respects.
