White House Shakes Up Leadership: NTSB Board Member Fired Amid Alarming Allegations
National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) member J. Todd Inman has been dismissed from his position following allegations of misconduct and attendance issues. The White House announced his termination on Monday, citing “highly concerning reports” regarding inappropriate alcohol use, harassment of staff, misuse of government resources, and failure to attend a significant number of meetings.
White House spokesman Kush Desai confirmed that Inman’s exit from the NTSB was lawful and necessary. In response, Inman vehemently denied the claims, stating, “It has become increasingly obvious this action was a political hit job. While not my original intent, I look forward to defending my reputation through all legal means possible.” His statement reflects ongoing tensions between him and NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy, indicating a tumultuous tenure on the board.
Reports of Inman’s dismissal surfaced on Sunday, revealing that he was informed of his termination on Friday without a clear explanation. Before joining the NTSB in March 2024, Inman served as chief of staff to Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao during President Donald Trump’s first term. He had a significant role in high-profile investigations, including the tragic January 2025 collision of American Eagle Flight 5342 with a Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, which resulted in the loss of 67 lives, and the November crash of a UPS cargo plane in Louisville, Kentucky, that claimed 15 lives.
This shake-up at the NTSB follows the previously reported firing of another board member, Vice Chair Alvin Brown, in May. Brown, who made history as the first African American mayor of Jacksonville, filed a lawsuit challenging his dismissal, which also lacked a specific justification from the White House.
The NTSB plays a critical role in investigating civil aviation accidents, as well as significant incidents across other transportation modes, including highways, marine, pipelines, and railroads. After Inman’s departure, the board continues to emphasize its commitment to enhancing transportation safety.
In related news, late last month, the Senate confirmed John DeLeeuw, a former managing director of safety and efficiency for American Airlines and a Boeing 787 captain, to fill Brown’s vacated seat on the NTSB. As the agency navigates these leadership changes, its focus on thorough investigations and safety recommendations remains paramount.
As the situation develops, Inman’s future legal actions and the ongoing dynamics within the NTSB will be closely monitored by both transportation authorities and the public.
