Senior Congress leader Ratul Kalita resigned from the party’s primary membership and all official duties on Saturday in Nalbari, accusing state leadership of authoritarianism and neglect over the distribution of electoral tickets. Kalita — who announced his decision at a press conference held at his home — said more than 20 other senior local leaders and workers joined him in quitting, a development that poses a fresh challenge for the Congress in the district ahead of the next elections.
A veteran of more than two decades in the party, Kalita said he had remained loyal through the organisation’s difficult phases but felt repeatedly sidelined. He complained that grassroots workers are overlooked while ministers and members of influential families receive priority. Kalita recalled seeking the party ticket in the 2021 assembly polls but standing down when senior leader Pradyut Kumar Bhuyan wanted to contest; he said he later applied again but the party awarded the nomination to Dweepayan instead, and that he has now been denied a ticket once more.
Kalita said the deeper wound was not losing a ticket but the leadership’s silence. According to him, even after the candidate list was announced, 90 hours passed without any senior leader checking on him. He added that MLA Mira Borthakur eventually phoned to urge him not to quit, citing his age and remaining time in politics; Kalita questioned why similar considerations did not apply to other leaders such as Tanjil Hossain or Prateek Bardoloi.
He also criticised the party’s decision to give the Nalbari ticket to Ashok Sharma, a recent BJP defector, alleging that genuine Congress workers are being bypassed in favour of rejected leaders from other parties. Kalita described Sharma as a hardline RSS figure and pointed to allegations — including land-grab accusations, he said — to question how such a person secured a Congress ticket, thereby challenging the judgment of the party president and top state leadership.
Kalita further expressed disappointment that, when he was allegedly assaulted in front of Rajiv Bhavan by police inspector Mrinal Deka in an earlier incident, no senior party leader reached out to check on him. The press conference became emotional, and more than 20 senior local leaders publicly announced their departure alongside Kalita.
While Kalita severed long-standing ties with the Congress and voiced strong criticisms of the state leadership, he has not yet disclosed any plans about his future political path or whether he will join another party.
