India Clinch T20 World Cup Final After Thrilling 7-Run Win Over England
India edged England by seven runs in a thrilling second semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, March 5, after posting 253 for seven in their 20 overs and then restricting England to 246 for seven while defending the total. The win sends India into the final, where they will meet New Zealand on Sunday, March 8, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Opting to field, England were set a daunting 254-run target. Jacob Bethell’s sensational unbeaten 105 off 48 balls kept England in contention with aggressive strokeplay, but his effort fell short as the visitors finished seven runs shy.
India’s innings was spearheaded by Sanju Samson, who struck an explosive 89 off 42 deliveries, including eight fours and seven sixes. India lost Abhishek Sharma cheaply for nine, but Ishan Kishan injected momentum with a brisk 39 from 18 balls. Shivam Dube added 43 off 25, Hardik Pandya contributed a quick 27 off 12, and Tilak Varma’s late blitz of 21 from seven balls helped push India past the 250 mark.
Earlier, New Zealand booked their place in the final by beating South Africa by nine wickets with 43 balls to spare in the first semi-final at Eden Gardens on March 4. The stage is now set for an India–New Zealand title clash in Ahmedabad on March 8.
