Revealing Audit Exposes Shocking Discrepancies in Kochi Corporation’s Samridhi Eatery Accounts; Indira Canteen Set to Inspire Change!
People enjoying lunch at the Samridhi restaurant, managed by Kochi Corporation, are at the center of an ongoing political debate. Recent allegations from the Left Democratic Front (LDF) suggest that the United Democratic Front (UDF)-led council is attempting to undermine the budget eatery. A preliminary audit, initiated by the UDF, has reportedly revealed discrepancies in Samridhi’s financial accounts, as confirmed by Kochi Corporation Mayor V.K. Minimol. However, the mayor declined to share specific details, noting that the audit is still ongoing.
Since taking office last year, the UDF council has recognized the significance and uniqueness of the Samridhi initiative while accusing the prior administration of obscuring its financial records. This has raised questions about whether the venture is profitable or operating at a loss. In response, the LDF, which launched Samridhi during its governance, has characterized these allegations as a strategic maneuver to promote the competing Indira Canteen at Samridhi’s expense.
“The preliminary audit has indicated discrepancies in Samridhi’s accounts,” Mayor Minimol stated. “We will present the final audited report to the council for approval. Clearly, the current operational model for Samridhi is unsustainable. We need to develop an operation system aligned with the auditors’ recommendations. I want to emphasize that there is no intent to sabotage Samridhi; our aim is to transition it into an independent premium entity.”
LDF parliamentary party leader V.A. Sreejith responded by stating that the opposition is not against auditing the accounts of Samridhi, but expressed skepticism about the claim that it is running at a loss, especially given its backing through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. “Let them present the audited accounts to the council. However, if the UDF is so suspicious of the project, why did it open a canteen under Samridhi at its headquarters?” he questioned.
In a parallel development, the pilot Indira Canteen is set to open next to the Corporation’s zonal office in Edappally, with plans for another location at an old canteen building in Mattancherry. The aim is to establish canteens across various zonal offices, offering three meals a day priced between ₹10 and ₹50 for breakfast and dinner, and ₹30 for lunch. The Corporation has allocated ₹50 lakh for this initiative, which will be funded similarly to Samridhi through CSR activities.
“Much like the breakfast program in schools, food for the Indira Canteen will be sourced from Samridhi’s central kitchen, enhancing revenue for the venture. We also plan to expand the kitchen’s capacity to accommodate increased demand,” added Mayor Minimol.
This unfolding story highlights the tensions between political factions in Kochi while revealing concerns about the management and financial viability of community-run initiatives. As the audit progresses and the Indira Canteen prepares to launch, the outcomes will undoubtedly shape the future of these projects within the city.
