Delhi Boosts Security Amid West Asia Tensions: A Powerful Response to Rising Unrest
Amid rising tensions in West Asia, Delhi police have ramped up security across the capital in anticipation of potential unrest. Enhanced measures have been implemented, particularly around embassies in Chanakyapuri, religious sites, major hotels, and neighborhoods with a substantial expatriate population. An official announcement made on Monday detailed the deployment of additional personnel and the enforcement of prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, including the establishment of barricades around the embassies of the U.S., Iran, and Israel.
In addition to embassy security, the police are also focusing on key markets, places of worship, and hotels that attract numerous foreign visitors. With the festival of Holi approaching, police presence is intensified throughout the city, involving increased vehicle inspections and comprehensive patrolling to ensure law and order.
The police have strategically stationed personnel in vulnerable areas, including schools, colleges, and girls’ hostels, to boost visibility and community reassurance. “In high-traffic zones, we will deploy drones to monitor for violations and potential disturbances,” said Abhishek Dhania, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for East Delhi. He emphasized the vigilance of traffic police to mitigate issues like drunk driving and public misconduct as the city prepares for Holi amidst the ongoing month of Ramzan.
In the East and South-East districts, specialized ‘TEJAS Patrol’ units are being introduced. DCP Hemant Tewari noted that these units aim to enhance street safety through increased visibility and rapid response to incidents, particularly targeting habitual offenders.
As part of the security enhancements for Holi, Monika Bhardwaj, DCP for Traffic-II, indicated that 15,000 police personnel will be deployed throughout the city, supported by 1,500 traffic officers dedicated to managing road safety and traffic arrangements. “We have identified over 80 locations in Delhi for anti-drunk driving measures,” she added, noting the establishment of joint checkpoints with local police at more than 100 sites. Proactive measures will also include bicycle patrols along significant roadways.
This comprehensive security strategy aims to ensure the safety of all citizens and visitors during a time marked by both communal celebrations and the potential for unrest. As Delhi gears up for the festivities, authorities are committed to maintaining peace and community stability in the capital.
