India-Canada Seal Game-Changing Uranium Deal; Advance Trade Talks
New Delhi, March 2 — India and Canada on Monday signed a landmark agreement for long-term uranium supplies and agreed to soon finalise a comprehensive economic partnership agreement, following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney. The leaders also concluded accords on critical minerals and set terms of reference for the planned trade pact.
Under the civil nuclear cooperation deal, Canada will supply uranium to India. Prime Minister Modi said the agreement will be complemented by collaboration on small modular reactors and advanced reactors, signalling deeper ties in clean-energy technology and nuclear fuel security. Small modular reactors are compact, factory-built nuclear units that can be added incrementally to meet power needs.
Alongside nuclear and minerals cooperation, both sides firmed up the framework for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), with officials expected to finalise negotiation terms soon. The CEPA aims to broaden trade and investment links between the two economies.
Modi framed the rapprochement as rooted in shared democratic values and a common vision for humanity’s well‑being. “India and Canada hold an unwavering faith in democratic values. We celebrate diversity. The well-being of humanity is our shared vision,” he said, adding that the talks were about transforming that vision into a “next level partnership.”
The two leaders also pledged to boost defence-industrial ties and enhance maritime domain awareness. They discussed the precarious security situation in West Asia; Modi said India supports resolving disputes through dialogue and diplomacy and stressed that New Delhi will work with other countries to ensure the safety of Indian citizens in the region.
Counterterrorism cooperation featured in the talks as well. “We agree that terrorism, extremism and radicalisation are shared and serious challenges,” Modi said, underlining the importance of close collaboration for global peace and stability.
Carney described the meetings as charting a new course for an expanded, “valued partnership” between Canada and India. (PTI)
