Breaking: Iran-Israel War Escalates — Urgent Frontline Developments
On March 2, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the situation in West Asia was a matter of “grave concern” and reiterated India’s call for peace and stability, saying “India stands for peace and stability” during a joint press briefing with UK Prime Minister Mark Carney. He stressed New Delhi’s preference for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve disputes, saying, “India has always called for dialogue and diplomacy to find a solution to such disputes.”
Modi said the government is closely monitoring developments and is in touch with countries across the region to safeguard Indian nationals. “We are working closely with every country to ensure the safety of all Indian nationals in the region,” he told reporters, without offering specific numbers of citizens affected.
The prime minister’s remarks followed a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security a day earlier, the government’s highest decision-making body on security and strategic matters, which reviewed the evolving situation triggered by the fresh conflict in West Asia. After the meeting, Modi held a telephonic conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the escalating tensions.
Government sources told reporters that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had a strained history with India, citing four instances of interference in India’s internal affairs between 2017 and 2024 that prompted the Ministry of External Affairs to summon Iranian envoys on each occasion.
According to officials cited by the source, the United States and Israel launched what were described as their most ambitious attacks on Iran in decades on Saturday, an operation they say killed Khamenei, sank Iranian warships and struck more than 1,000 targets. The report added that Iran retaliated by striking military bases in Kuwait and Bahrain with drones and missiles and by hitting three US- and UK-linked oil tankers in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
The government emphasized ongoing diplomatic engagement and monitoring as it coordinates with partners to protect Indians in the region.
