Kerala Story 2 Gets Green Light: High Court Lifts Stay, Igniting Excitement for Fans!
The Kerala High Court lifted the stay on the release of “The Kerala Story 2,” allowing the film to premiere as scheduled on February 27. This decision came from a bench comprising Justices SA Dharmadhikari and PV Balakrishnan, who set aside a previous interim order issued by Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas, which had postponed the film’s release for 15 days.
The initial stay was granted by Justice Kurian on February 26 after two petitions challenged the film’s release. The petitions argued that the movie misrepresents Kerala and could exacerbate communal tensions. One petitioner, Sreedev Namboodiri from Kannur, claimed that the film’s title and promotional content contained provocative themes that could incite violence and unfairly portray the state in a negative light. He specifically highlighted a line from the teaser, “ab sahenge nahin… ladenge” (we will not tolerate it anymore, we will fight), asserting that it could be interpreted as a provocation for conflict and potentially spark communal unrest.
Another petition, filed by Freddie V Francis, sought a ban on the film, contending that the use of the word “Kerala” in its title wrongfully associates the state with themes of terrorism and forced religious conversions. Francis characterized the film as a “marketing of hate” and questioned the filmmakers’ assertion that it is based on true events, noting that the narrative includes characters from regions beyond Kerala.
Following the filing of these petitions, the Division Bench convened for an urgent sitting at 7:30 PM on the same day to address the appeal from the movie’s producers. After a comprehensive hearing that lasted over two hours, the Bench reserved its verdict and announced its decision around 4 PM IST on Friday.
This ongoing controversy around “The Kerala Story 2” underscores significant tensions regarding representation and narrative in regional cinema. As the film prepares for its release, it remains to be seen how audiences and critics will respond, especially against the backdrop of these legal challenges.
The case highlights critical discussions in contemporary media about freedom of expression versus responsible storytelling, particularly in a diverse and complex social landscape like Kerala. With the film now cleared for release, attention will inevitably turn to its reception and the impact of its messaging.
