Assam Government’s Unyielding Promise: Safeguarding Women, Sacred Sites, and Indigenous Rights – Himanta Biswa Sarma Declares
Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to preserving the state’s cultural and social integrity. He underscored the government’s rigorous measures aimed at ensuring women’s safety, protecting sacred sites, and defending indigenous rights. Sarma asserted that his administration will be remembered for its steadfast dedication to maintaining Assam’s identity against illegal encroachment.
Highlighting the government’s focus on young women’s health, Sarma stated, “Whether Hindu or Muslim, daughters are the symbol of their mothers. Their health and well-being is our responsibility.” He emphasized the grave health consequences of early marriage, noting that young mothers often face severe health issues due to multiple pregnancies at a young age.
Sarma challenged legislators across religious lines to take a stand against child marriage, urging them to discourage marriages before the age of 18 using their public platforms. He pointed out significant health disparities among young women from different communities, claiming that “80% of the girls” exhibit visible health differences by age 24.
Addressing the issue of polygamy, Sarma announced his government’s plan to introduce relevant legislation. He provocatively suggested that if polygamy is found to be more prevalent among Hindus, the ban should start there, calling for support from his opponents.
Sarma’s speech emphasized cross-religious empathy and action, stating, “If I can be a Hindu and feel the pain of a Muslim girl, why can’t you understand as you took birth from the same mother?”
On the topic of Aadhaar card issuance, the Chief Minister reported a significant intervention by the state government to facilitate the issuance of Aadhaar cards for 9.35 lakh residents whose applications had been stalled for over four years. The impasse was due to difficulties linking the National Register of Citizens (NRC) with Aadhaar data. However, following an appeal on July 29, 2024, the Centre instructed the UIDAI on August 27, 2024, to proceed with the Aadhaar issuance for these individuals.
