Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 20 extended greetings to the people of Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram on the occasion of their Statehood Day, marking the 39th anniversary since both states attained full statehood in 1987. In brief messages, he highlighted their cultural richness, community strengths and strategic significance for the nation.
Referencing Arunachal Pradesh, Modi offered “Warm wishes to the people of Arunachal Pradesh on the occasion of their Statehood Day,” and praised the state’s majestic landscapes and extraordinary cultural diversity. He said Arunachal exemplifies harmony between tradition and nature and acknowledged the contribution of its people to national development, adding that the state’s diverse tribal ethos enriches the country and he hoped it would continue to scale new heights of development.
Arunachal Pradesh, often called the “Land of the Rising Sun,” borders Bhutan, China and Myanmar, a geographic position the Prime Minister underlined as strategically important. The territory evolved from the North Eastern Frontier Agency (NEFA) to a Union Territory in 1972 and was granted full statehood on February 20, 1987.
Modi also conveyed his greetings to Mizoram, writing on X, “Greetings to the people of Mizoram on their Statehood Day.” He lauded the state’s natural beauty, enduring cultural traditions and strong community spirit, saying the gracious people of Mizoram embody values of kindness and compassion.
Describing Mizo heritage as inspiring, the Prime Minister noted its expression through tradition, music and everyday life, and wished the state continued progress and new milestones in the years ahead.
Both Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram observe February 20 each year to commemorate their formal recognition as Indian states in 1987, a milestone Modi used to spotlight their role in the nation’s social and developmental fabric.
