BJP Surges in Tripura as Tribal Voters Drift from Tipra Motha
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said on February 17 that it is consolidating its position in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) as tribal voters increasingly shift away from the Tipra Motha Party, citing recent defections in Unakoti district. Tripura BJP general secretary Bipin Debbarma told reporters that 215 voters from 57 families had reportedly switched allegiance to the BJP, a sign he said of growing dissatisfaction with the council’s current leadership.
Debbarma said residents across parts of the TTAADC feel the ruling party in the council has “failed to deliver on development,” and that concerns have been particularly acute among women. He alleged that some women even presented a glass of water to Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishor Manikya Debbarma to highlight worries about drinking-water quality in their area.
Framing the defections as a vote for better governance, Debbarma said the BJP’s expanding support reflects local aspirations for development in tribal areas. “Our outreach in the district council has demonstrated the increasing trust in BJP. Every party worker is working tirelessly under the leadership of Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha. We are receiving massive support, and we are confident that BJP will form the government in the district council in 2026,” he said.
Debbarma also claimed that the Tipra Motha Party is uneasy about the BJP’s gains and has, he alleged, targeted BJP workers in response to the party’s growing influence in the TTAADC.
The assertions in this report are based on statements made by Bipin Debbarma on February 17 as provided by party sources.
