Exciting Progress: 67% of CMRL’s Phase II Stretch from Koyambedu to Chennai Trade Centre Completed!
Nearly 67% of the construction work for the Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase II stretch between Koyambedu and the Chennai Trade Centre has been completed, with an anticipated opening date set for June this year. This new line will enhance connectivity by establishing a critical interchange point between the ongoing Phase I and the upcoming Phase II networks at Koyambedu.
The extensive Phase II project, spanning 118.9 kilometers, is currently developing three primary corridors: Corridor 3 from Madhavaram to SIPCOT, Corridor 4 from Poonamallee to Light House, and Corridor 5 from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur. In a notable advancement, a segment of Corridor 4, specifically from Poonamallee to Vadapalani, is expected to open in just two weeks. This will be the first interchange point between the two phases at Vadapalani, followed closely by the Koyambedu to Chennai Trade Centre stretch.
Alongside this initiative, additional stations in Corridor 4, located between Alapakkam and Saligramam, are also slated to open in June. The construction for these stations has faced delays, projected to be completed in four months. According to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials, the viaduct work between Koyambedu and Chennai Trade Centre is set to wrap up by the end of March.
“We initiated track work in areas where the viaduct was ready, completing nearly 2 kilometers of the 12-kilometer stretch at locations including Mugalivakkam, Ramapuram, and Chennai Trade Centre,” a CMRL official stated. The track laying is progressing in tandem with the construction of the double-decker corridor, which will connect Alapakkam to Alwarthirunagar. When fully operational in four months, this corridor will provide multiple interchange options at Alapakkam, Karambakkam, Valasaravakkam, and Alwarthirunagar.
CMRL officials previously expressed ambitions to extend connectivity beyond Chennai Trade Centre to Alandur by June, creating an additional interchange point between the two phases. However, challenges remain.
To achieve this goal, the construction of two stations, Butt Road and Alandur, must be completed. While work on the Alandur station is progressing, significant hurdles affect the Butt Road station. Sources indicate that traffic permissions along Paul Wells Road have hindered construction efforts, delaying essential pile work at various locations. “Completing the viaduct and station at Paul Wells Road is turning out to be quite challenging,” a source revealed.
Despite these setbacks, CMRL officials are optimistic. They report that measures are being taken to address these issues and expedite the construction process. As the project moves forward, residents and commuters eagerly await the expansion of the Metro Rail, promising a more integrated public transportation network for Chennai.
The development of Chennai Metro Rail is crucial for enhancing the city’s transport infrastructure, facilitating ease of travel, and contributing to sustainable urban growth. As the June timeline approaches, authorities remain committed to overcoming obstacles to ensure timely completion, ultimately benefiting thousands of commuters across the city.
