কংগ্ৰেছ ত্যাগৰ পিছত: ভূপেন বৰাৰ নতুন শক্তিশালী অভিযান
Former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Bora formally announced his resignation from the Indian National Congress on Monday, a move that has sent ripples through the state’s political landscape. Bora, who gave few details about his decision, told reporters he had submitted his resignation to the party high command and would speak publicly at an appropriate time, while several senior Congress leaders remained at his official residence.
“To the question of why I resigned from the party, I will not disclose that at this moment,” Bora said. “I have sent my resignation letter to the party high command. Several senior Congress leaders are currently at my official residence. I will make everything public at the right time.” His refusal to elaborate has deepened speculation about internal disagreements within the state unit.
News of Bora’s exit prompted swift outreach from opposition parties. Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi publicly welcomed Bora and said his party’s doors remain open. Lurinjyoti Gogoi, president of the Asom Jatiya Parishad, reportedly contacted Bora personally and invited him to join their ranks. Bora, however, said the state chief minister had not contacted him.
Bora did not level direct accusations but hinted that internal conflict over negotiations for an opposition alliance forced his hand. Reports suggest that the inclusion of MP Rakibul Hussain in alliance discussions stirred tensions within the Congress’s state unit, though Bora offered no clarification and maintained silence on specifics.
A senior figure in Assam Congress, Bora served as APCC president from 2021 to 2024 and was a two-term MLA from the Bihpuria constituency between 2006 and 2016. His leadership has been credited with playing a significant role in efforts to revive the party’s state organisation.
Parallel to Bora’s resignation, West Guwalpara MLA Abdur Rashid Mondal confirmed he has joined Raijor Dal. Mondal said the episode that prompted Rakibul Hussain’s intervention exposed disorder within the Congress, underlining the party’s internal turmoil.
Akhil Gogoi rejected speculation that Bora would join the Bharatiya Janata Party, saying, “It is true that Bhupen Bora has left Congress, but he will not join the BJP. He is a major leader of the opposition alliance. Several senior leaders are trying to persuade him to remain in Congress.”
For now, Bora’s next political move remains unclear. His resignation and the responses it has generated highlight fault lines in Assam’s opposition politics and set the stage for renewed jockeying among regional parties and national outfits alike.
