Empowering India’s Future: Nation Takes Center Stage in Shaping Global AI with World Leaders and Tech Titans!

India is set to host one of the largest artificial intelligence summits in the world, starting Monday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi aiming to position the country as a key player in the global AI race. The India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi is expected to attract a host of global leaders, tech executives, AI founders, and investors, marking what could be the most significant gathering of AI experts to date. Notable attendees include Sundar Pichai of Alphabet Inc., Sam Altman from OpenAI, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, and Alexandr Wang from Meta Platforms, alongside prominent researchers like Yann LeCun and Arthur Mensch.

The summit will culminate over two days, February 19 and 20, with French President Emmanuel Macron delivering the keynote address, followed by remarks from Modi. For the Indian Prime Minister, this summit serves as an opportunity to showcase the country’s tech-savvy youth and engineering capabilities, which could potentially shift the balance in the global AI competition. India boasts a digital infrastructure built on data from over a billion citizens, identifiable through the Aadhaar biometric ID system. Despite missing the personal computer wave, India rapidly evolved into a software services powerhouse, transitioning from limited landlines to nearly a billion smartphones in less than two decades.

“By overlaying AI over existing digital identity, payment systems, and sectors like healthcare, education, and governance, India aims to condense decades of development into mere years,” noted Abhishek Singh, additional secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and IT. He emphasized that innovations developed for India will extend beyond its borders.

India is already sharing its digital identity and payment frameworks globally. The Modular Open Source Identity Platform (MOSIP), inspired by Aadhaar’s architecture, is aiding countries such as the Philippines, Morocco, and Uganda in establishing national ID systems. This trend is mirrored by various nations creating digital payment infrastructures on similar foundations.

In terms of AI competitiveness, India currently ranks third globally, trailing only the US and China, as reported by Stanford University’s Institute for Human-Centered AI. Major tech firms have begun to recognize this potential, with OpenAI and Anthropic establishing operations in India to engage with local enterprises, developers, and government entities. Google and Meta are investing in expanding data centers to cater to this rapidly growing market for models like ChatGPT and Gemini.

However, analysts warn that years of underinvestment in technology research could impede India’s AI growth trajectory. Aakrit Vaish, founder of AI investment firm Activate, stresses the need for a robust research ecosystem to ensure India evolves beyond being merely a testing ground for Silicon Valley innovations.

Efforts are underway to create AI models tailored to India’s diverse linguistic landscape. At the summit, BharatGen, a collaboration of top-tier engineering institutions, will introduce Param2, a 17-billion parameter model capable of supporting 22 Indian languages. Additionally, Sarvam AI, backed by Lightspeed Venture Partners and Khosla Ventures, will unveil a larger voice-first AI model. These initiatives aim to make AI affordable for a large population, transforming sectors from education to healthcare.

As US companies navigate increasing competition from local models, the challenge remains to achieve profitability in India’s AI market, echoing similar hurdles faced in China. The emphasis on affordability could be transformative. “Our model is designed to accelerate adoption in key sectors like governance, education, and health,” stated Rishi Bal, CEO of BharatGen. “In India and many developing regions, cost considerations are paramount.”

Himanshu Tyagi, co-founder of Sentient AI, believes India has an opportunity to catch up by concentrating on advanced reasoning and robotics, stating that “the next wave of intelligence will rely on data beyond the internet.” As India embraces this AI summit, the global tech community watches closely, eager to see how the nation’s ambitions unfold in this fast-evolving landscape.
